I have no doubt you could learn to draw if you gave it a chance. I might have had a leg up in seeing two-dimensionally from doing photography for all those years, but I never really tried to draw before the course. I didn't think I'd be any good at it. Still don't, really.

It turns out there's really nothing very magic about it. There are a few tricks and exercises to get past the usual naive mistakes that everybody makes, but the whole thing (for realistic representational drawing from real life, anyway) boils down to one thing: draw what you really see, not what you think ought to be there.

The other big revelation for me was that it's slow work, at least for me. It can take hours to do a relatively simple drawing. The good news is that the time flies ... the work is very absorbing. Of course, it helps if you can set aside some time to work without interruptions.

OMG - Ellen told me that you took at drawing class and to go look at what you did. I am AMAZED!! I wonder if I could learn to draw. You made amazing progress in such a short time. Was the teacher that good or do you think you just have the knack? Can't wait to see.

Wow, Paul! I am impressed! Reading in reverse chronological order, I saw the drawings before I read that you were taking a class, and I was wondering who the great artist was! :-D

The fifth point is the main problem, URL shorteners defeat the purpose of the existence of URLs. Also, the fact that anyone would be reluctant to visit certain sites is absolutely hilarious, it just proves how flawed computing and the web is today.

Hi Paul, I didn't know you had a PS3. We have one, and I've also wanted a way to stream videos to it from a (Linux) file server. It didn't support any of the network protocols I already had (NFS, AFP, CIFS, DAAP, Slimserver) so I eventually found something called Mediatomb. I never did get it to work right; at most I could see my directory structure, but the actual files were missing.

Eventually I gave up. When I want to look at a video file on the PS3, I use sneakernet on a flash stick. Slow and ugly, but it works.

There has to be a better way. And I'm beginning to rethink the whole file server concept. Hard drives are getting so huge that you can easily afford to duplicate your whole library on each device that might want it -- if you can make that modification. I wonder, will a PS3 see an external hard drive plugged into a USB port? It always sees flash sticks, but I've had trouble on the few times I've connected portable hard drives.

Paul,

Thanks for putting up the webcam. I am an avid hiker and webcams are the best way this time of year to figure out if there is snow on the ground.

It looks like everything is clear now- do you know how high up on the mountain the ground is clear of snow? I am planning a hike from the 79 up to the lookout tower for next weekend and I would love it if it was snow free. Thanks!

Cheers,
Kate
