On Judging Student Art
Wednesday, June 21, 2006
I’m at the county fair, looking at the high school and community college photography entries. A small group of college-age people just went by, spending about as long on each wall as I was spending on each image. I heard one of them exclaim, “I hate it when they have Old People judging!”
I think maybe she had a point. Who is to say that one generation’s artistic criteria are valid for another? Are the Fair judges missing something important? Am I?
Maybe so. I know it’s not exactly the same thing, though, since I’m not always in agreement with the judges.
