Burned Bushes

Z4 Service Call

Took the Z4 in to Brecht BMW for a few complaints. The good news was, they got me in and out in about an hour. The bad news was, they didn’t actually fix anything.

  1. The navigation LCD needs replacing. They had to order the part. I’ll have to come back for a multi-hour session to get it installed.
  2. The roof rubs when going down, causing a clunk. The mechanic misunderstood the complaint and didn’t find anything wrong. When I demonstrated the problem, he proposed to fix it on the next visit. In the meantime he wants to examine other Z4 tops, since he doesn’t know how to fix it.
  3. The rattle, he didn’t hear on a road test. Again he proposes to try again next time, on a road test with me in the car. Why we didn’t do that today, I’m not sure.
  4. I had pre-ordered the parts for installation of the aux audio input kit. They hadn’t ordered it. At first, they claimed it didn’t exist. Then they said it did exist but they don’t have any in stock, but they would order one for me.

At least they washed the car for me.

House Project

Yesterday Chad came and measured the windows. Found termites.

Today I stripped all the antennas off the back porch and removed all
the antenna feedlines to prepare for sandblasting and porch demolition.
Anybody care to place a bet as to when (or if) I get all those antennas
back up?

Reading Room Update

Finished with Emotional Design: Why We Love (or Hate) Everyday Things by Donald A. Norman. He makes excellent sense when he’s describing how people react to things. Which makes it all the more surprising how naive and silly are his predictions for the future of home automation and robots.
